Ball games used to be source of fun

Today's sentimental journey is taking us to 1953 for a look at what was on the sports page of the Marion Star. You must remember how much fun we had at the ball parks in Marion before technology came into our lives.

Our first item comes from the Wednesday, June 3, 1953, Marion Star with this headline: "All-Stars, K & W Remain In Deadlock For League Lead."

G.I. Post, Smitty's All-Stars and the K & W Plumbing teams carved out victories in the Commercial Softball Loop Tuesday at Garfield Park.

G.I. Post pounded out 11 hits against Bird McGinnis to take a 10-2 decision and win its first game of the season. The winners rattled hits around the park all evening, beginning with five in the first inning which netted two runs and a lead they never relinquished. Bud Thorpe limited Bird McGinnis to five hits while contributing two hits and two runs to his own cause. G.I. Post reversed its first inning performance in the sixth by scoring five runs on only two hits to put the game away.
