Boys Basketball: Leyden gears up for Tuesday's regional opener

There shouldn’t be any big surprises when Leyden opens play in the Lyons Township Class 4A Regional at 8:10 p.m. Feb. 28 against Morton.

Leyden enters postseason play as the No. 7 seed in the Schaumburg Sectional, while Morton is No. 10. The winner of Tuesday’s contest advances to a 7:30 p.m. March 2 regional championship, possibly against No. 2 Oak Park-River Forest. Proviso East is the No. 1 seed in the sectional and is hosting its own regional.

Morton and Leyden, both West Suburban Conference Gold Division teams, are anything but strangers to each other and have split the two conference games they played against each other in each of the past three seasons.

“It’s become somewhat of a rivalry,” Leyden coach Bill Heisler said. “I think our kids will be jacked up to play them.

“You definitely know what you’re going to get with them. They are athletic; we have to keep them off the glass. The big difference in our two games against them this season is that we had a bunch of different guys hit shots when we beat them at their place.
