Tell mom: science says video games are good for the eyes
This is not the story your mother or significant other wants to hear. New research claims that playing first person shooters could improve your eyesight .
Six patients with lifelong cataract disorders were asked to play Medal of Honor for 40 hours over the course of one month. Results showed that the vision in five of the six subjects showed signs of improvement — including recognizing faces more easily and responding to events and objects on screen more quickly.
That's handy when it comes to first person shooters.
So how could video games help improve vision? Well, it turns out for the same reasons we get excited while playing the games. The stimulated levels of dopamine and adrenaline we get when playing a video game make the brain more active, and that includes the eyes.
Daphne Maurer of McMaster University in Canada led the study. Speaking at a science convention in Vancouver, she explained: "The visual nervous system is still plastic enough to either form or reveal connections in adulthood…and we suspect that might be true for any kind of visual defect."
