Detroit's Easter Fun Fest draws children to Belle Isle
Forget about the other Easter eggs -- Carson Stewart and Charles Carter wanted the gold.
The two Detroit boys were among several hunting for those special eggs at the Detroit Recreation Department's Easter Fun Fest, held at the Belle Isle Casino on Saturday.
Hundreds of children descended on the park for bounce houses, midway games, face painting, hat decorating and egg hunts on the half hour. Kids who found gold eggs got big prizes of toys and candy.
Carson, who picked a few eggs from the ground, said he looked up in a tree, and there was a gold egg.
The sunny day meant the gold eggs gleamed. Charles found his on the ground.
Kathy Bridge, a recreation center supervisor, said the event has been held about a half dozen years and that last year, 8,000 people came.
"It kicks off our spring and summer programming," she said.
She said the event will remain free. To help offset costs, she works with volunteers.
One was the Easter Bunny. Damajia Ayers, 17, doesn't mind donning the suit and letting countless parents take photos of him with their kids. "Every event, I volunteer," said the future college freshman.
